Perspective 1: Creative Mind Book Review

So I just finished reading this book a few moments ago and I must say to you all, I highly recommend it. The author Ernest Holmes beautifully conveys detailed instruction on how to access the untapped potential of our natural divinity. Over the course of the book you find yourself applying what you read almost instantly, the common sense factor is astonishing. At nearly every page turn I would say to myself: "yep, that makes perfect sense, I've always kinda felt this way" and I'm sure you'll relate. Page by page I completed the short book with a growing sensation of endless opportunity. I urge you to read this book, it will...

Down with the Struggle?

Last month several of the Fellows and I set up one of our Cool Spots at the Families and Friends of Incarcerated People Cookout, held at River Terrace Park in Northeast D.C. The site wasn't far from Spingarn Senior High School, where I spent a few weeks before following the principal and vice principal to my current site, Washington Metropolitan High School. It took a while for people to show up, but as the afternoon wore on the heat didn't stop about 50 people or so from turning out for a day of hot dogs, hamburgers, gospel entertainment and chilling out.

It was early in our experiences with the Cool Spot setup, and we started to...

Does Baseball Live in DC?

Baseball, baseball and more baseball; during my first week at WHUT Howard University Television station I was overwhelmed with discussion of the history of baseball and Ken Burns. The PBS household name is soon to release a new documentary entitled “The Tenth Inning."

The documentary is a new dynamic exploration of baseball. However with the sport no longer considered “America's past time"; Who will watch?

Especially in urban areas like Washington, DC; where sports like football and basketball are more popular.

Despite the current unpopularity amongst the younger generation DC has a rich baseball history. A legacy...

Reading Literacy With Super Why

Reading can be fun, at least when Super Why is involved.

Super Why is a PBS Kids program that's designed to teach reading literacy to children ages 3 to 6.  Princess Presto, Pig Wonder Red, Alpha Pig, and Super Why are the four main characters that make  essential reading skills fun to learn.

WHUT decided to use Super Why as a component to help promote reading literacy in the Washington, DC area. The station created partnership with several schools. A component of the partnership required that the school identify students that were were reading below average. Those students were then tested and offered the opportunity to...

Unnatural Anchors: Engaging Youth In News

Though we fellows began our Public Media Corps fellowships in early July, I'm just now getting to a point where I can start getting my hands dirty. And I'm glad the ideas are starting to flow, and I finally see a chance of carrying them out.

I started out based at a high school in Northeast DC where the leadership was in flux. I thought I'd be preparing to work with a student body largely made up of young single mothers. But plans changed, and as of last week I've moved to Washington Metropolitan High...
